Department of Electricity, Lakshadweep bagged CSI-Nihilent eGovernance award 2006-07.

                The CSI-Nihilent e-Governance award 2006-07 for the best e-Governed Department category has been jointly awarded to Department of Electricity, Lakshadweep and Department of Health and family welfare, Government of Gujarat for the achievements they had in implementing e-Governance applications in their respective Departments. Computer Society of India with support from Nihilent has initiated these awards to encourage e-Governance initiatives in the country. The Computer Society of India (CSI) is the largest association of information technology professionals in India, with over 30,000 members comprising software developers, scientists, academicians, project managers, CIO's, CTO's and IT vendors, among others and Nihilent is an ISO 9001:2000 and SEISM CMMI® Level 5 certified global business consulting and solutions integration company with presence in India, USA, UK and South Africa.
 




Presentation by Hon’ble Administrator

           The Hon. Administrator  Sri. B. V. Selvaraj, IAS made a crisp and interesting presentation of the Project to the IT professionals and Secretaries of various state governments in a packed gallery. During the presentation the Hon. Administrator said “the Administration along with all the political representatives viz.  Member of Parliament, members of the District and Village (Dweep) Panchayats has been working towards effective administrative reforms through aggressive e-governance. We are going to have a basket of e-governance projects and compete for the best e-administered State/ UT of  the country shortly.” He recalled that recently Lakshadweep was awarded the Manthan Award for the Total  digitization of employment services, first in the whole country.
 



             He also shared that In spite of the remoteness, isolation from the mainland and between the islands the Administration has done a commendable job in totally integrating the services to the electricity consumers. This has the following components.

1. Web-enabled consumer Management and Energy Billing System

2. Web-enabled Materials Management System

3. Web-enabled personnel Management System

4. Web-enabled Pay-roll Management System

5. Intranet for the department

 

            It was applauded with cheer when he informed that “Lakshadweep is the first Union Territory/State in the whole country to have ‘universally electrified’ every household in the territory and in every island, large as well as small. And “every house is lighted”. Lakshadweep is the first Union Territory/State to have introduced self assessment of electricity consumer charges. Because of the efficient materials management and transportation of fuel and effective maintenance of the power houses there has been no instance of any load shedding in the last one year which was also very widely applauded.

 Intensive evaluation done by CSI of Lakshadweep project

            The CSI through the Awards committee comprising Sri S. P. Singh, Sr. Director, DIT, Sri. Piyush Gupta, General manager, National Institute of Smart Governance(NISG) and other experts from International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad has made intensive and scientific evaluation of the project after screening and short listing various entries and their field testing of the systems. It has been finally decided to give the award to Lakshadweep Administration. The third party evaluation was recognition par excellence of the good work done by the Dept of Electricity and NIC. It is notable that the integrated software for the various services was designed and developed by National informatics Centre (NIC) Lakshadweep U T Unit. It is another feather in the cap of NIC, Lakshadweep.

Release of Brochure “Winds of Change in Lakshadweep”

                 A colourful and beautiful booklet “Winds of Change in Lakshadweep” aptly published on the occasion was formally released by the convener of CSI e-Governance group Dr. Ashok Aggarwal by giving the first copy to Major General(Rtd) Dr. R.K. Bagga, Adviser, International institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad and to Sri. Piyush Gupta, General Manager, NISG.

 

            In the afternoon, the delegation of Lakshadweep Administration and NIC led by Hon’ble Administrator Sri. B. V. Selvaraj, I.A.S.  and comprising of Sri. Ajith Brahamanandan, Techncial Director & SIO, NIC, Lakshadweep, Sri.M.Hassan, Executive Engineer, Sri.M. Koya, Assistant Engineer, Sri. K. Anver Hussain, Junior Engineer received the award and citation. The following were present on the occasion. Sri. K.K. Aggarwal, President, CSI and Vice chancellor, Guru Gobin Sing Indraprasta University, Sri. Kailash Vijayvergiya, Madhya Pradesh Minister for IT, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat, Sri. S.P. Singh, Senior Director, Department of Information Technology, Government of India, IT Secretaries of Gujarat, Goa, Jharkand, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and various other Senior government officials and IT professionals from all over the country.

           The presence of Hon Administrator, Shri. B V Selvaraj,I.A.S, as head of the Administration  through the entire session was appreciated by the organizers and the entire presentation and the turn-out of the delegation left a positive impression among the most discerning audience.
